Cómpeta Guided Holidays
Our return visit to Competa didn’t disappoint. Once again we had a brilliant time. Many thanks for the great walks, food, wine & lovely accommodation. As we look at the grey skies at home very much wishing we were in Competa ! Hope to see you again in the future. Carol & Felicity (Lancs) Oct 2023
We had a fabulous holiday and truly appreciated everything that you did to make it so special. Liz and Tony (Essex Sept) 2023
Thank you for a fantastic time and your wonderful hospitality. You really do go over and above what I would expect any holiday company to offer. I will be recommending you most definitely! Heidi (Lancs) Oct 2023
Many thanks again for a wonderful time. I am now in the process of sorting out next year’s holiday with you. Pam & friends (Swansea) Oct 2023
Thank you again for your hospitality. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and we look forward to seeing you again in the future. Warm wishes Neil & Jane (South Yorkshire) April 2022
What an experience, a challenge and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. You were all so welcoming, patient and knowledgeable. All those who participated in the weeks activities were a delight to be in their company, it is as if you selected them all and put us together. Thouse was gorgeous – full of character, food divine throughout the week and weather could not have been better. Each of your personalities shun through your individual care and input to ensure the trip from start to finish flowed seamlessly. My grandchildren are all in admiration of their grandma – me. You all made that possible. Thank you all once again. Georgia (South London) Holy week
Thank you for all your attention to detail on our holiday. The accommodation, walking and food were all perfect and I found it an enjoyable and relaxing holiday. The added cultural aspect of Easter was really interesting. Thank you for your generosity, particularly where the food and drink were concerned. It’s the first walking holiday where I have put on weight! Best wishes and thanks again you to all. Catriona (Sterling) Holy Week April 2022
Thank you also for a wonderful holiday with Spanish Steps. You are all fabulous hosts and made sure all our needs were met. The walks were great and I really enjoyed seeing the villages I had already glimpsed on Place in the Sun! The food was really good and I very much enjoyed the variety of restaurants and eating as a group, especially with the wine included! I hope to come on another Spanish Steps holiday one day. Two and a half years to retirement, so watch this space! Wishing you all the best and hope to see you again. Dianne (Yorkshire) Semana Santa 2022
Just to say how very much we enjoyed our week with Spanish Steps. It was a wonderful holiday and surpassed all expectations! The walking was perfect, the food and wine were delicious, the accommodation was charming, and of course our hosts were genial and charming! We were lucky too to be part of such a relaxed and friendly group – all lovely people. I know a lot of hard work and planning goes into organising such a stress free week for your guests. The beauty of yours being a small independent company is that the service really is personal and you are able to alter the programme to suit our needs and the weather. We really do hope to join you again in the not too distant future for another holiday. Deidre & Phil (Doncaster) Oct 2019
We had a fantastic holiday. The walks were wonderful and the views stunning. The people great and it’s the people that make the holiday. A big thank you to Andy for his guiding and patience and to you and Sue for letting us stay in your beautiful Spanish house and for your hospitality. This was one of the best guided group holidays we have been on. Beverly & Brian High (Yorks) Oct 2019
Thank you all so much for a great holiday. We loved every minute of it and Cómpeta was even nicer than I remembered. Mari & Dan (Ireland) Oct 2019
I can only repeat what I have been saying since my previous week in Competa years ago – Spanish Steps is an experience unequaled in my opinion. The quality and charm of the house reflects the quality and effort that you put into making sure that everyone enjoys the week from the crazy( but fabulous) breakfasts right through each day until we climb those high steps to bed!! You do a really great job!” Mary (Ireland) Oct 2019
Thanks for a great holiday and it always brings back great memories when return to Competa. We’re looking forward to returning again soon. Take care and catch up soon. Robin & Katrina (Yorks) Oct 2019
Thank you so much. For a well organized week. For the snug accommodation. For all the fabulous walks. For the great meals. For the wine we enjoyed watching the sunset from the fairy tale rooftop terrace. For being so friendly and generous and patient and encouraging. I have to stop myself before I thank you even for the breathtaking scenery… I had such a good time, and came back both physically and mentally refreshed. Your advertisement is true to the last comma. I must admit I had my doubts, because it sounded too good to be true – but it exceeded my expectations. I will now recommend Spanish Steps to all my friends, so prepare for a Swedish invasion. Ylva (Lovestad) September 2019
Both of us loved our stay in Competa and the adventurous walks. We’re looking forward to our next holiday with Spanish Steps and thoroughly recommend them to anyone who enjoys good walking in tremendous scenery. John & Carol September 2019
Many thanks for last week’s walking holiday which was exceptional. The walking, company and organisation was first class and I came away with a much better knowledge of the beautiful area in which you live. Again, many thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise with me. Sheila (Leics) Sept 2019
Thank you so so much for a brilliant holiday….the house, meals out, hospitality, the other travellers and the guiding. I didn’t want the holiday to end! I have already looked at what I can book next year! Home now, washing done and missing the sunshine Thanks again, best wishes. Christine (Cheshire) Sept 2019
The Silk Trail
We had a great time on our walking holiday. We enjoyed every moment and are already looking forward to our next adventure with Spanish Steps. Keep up the good work. Hasta el próximo año. Al & Alison (Worcestershire) October 2023
Thank you for another fabulous holiday with Spanish Steps. We thoroughly enjoyed the walking, some of it challenging in parts but spectacular views all the way. Competa is a wonderful base. The accommodation is great with a fine, varied selection of restaurants. The house in Frigliana was a lovely surprise, great for two guests. Big thanks to Sue for packing up the hearty breakfast goodies. Please keep in touch with regard to your 2024 schedule. Morocco sounds interesting and this could be on our radar for next year. In the mean-time we wish you well and hope you have a very successful season Neil & Jane (South Yorkhire) May 2023
Thank you for another great walking experience with Spanish Steps, simply the best company to walk with. I shall be looking for the 2020 walking dates on your website. When they do appear, I will make my decision as to my choice and advise you accordingly. Norman (Lancs) May 2019
Thanks for making this holiday as enjoyable as all of the others you have provided me with. I especially enjoyed the stay in Cómpeta with its low key ambiance and lack of day tourists. I look forward to being with you again in the not too distant future. Michael (New York) May 2019
It was a splendid week walking the Silk Trail. Thank you for your skilful organization in arranging such a great holiday. The magic of Spanish Steps continues! I thoroughly enjoyed being back in the sierras of Andalucia with the profusion of wild flowers and the wonderful views. We were as always well rewarded at the end of the day with delicious meals and wine which was much appreciated. Margaret (Berks) May 2018
We would like to thank you for a memorable week. The walking was spectacular (and challenging), the weather ideal, the accommodation delightful, the food and drink excellent, and the friendship and attention from you unsurpassed. We greatly appreciated meeting and being guided by Andy who we are sure, should he wish to become more involved, be a great addition to the management team. We don’t think we are finished with Spanish Steps yet ……. we still have the Two Continents to do. Hugh and Jackie (Surrey) May 2018
Muchos gracias for another great Spanish Steps holiday. A selection of amazingly scenic walks and a very interesting group of fellow guests made for another fantastic week. The house in Competa is as quirky as ever, and the hotels in Frigiliana and Maro, together with excellent food throughout the week, were well up to your usual high standards. Hugh & Ishbel (Ayrshire)
Thank you for a fabulous week on The Silk Trail, as memorable as ever , tough, challenging but thoroughly enjoyed. As always the meals and wine flowed and we had fun evenings! Always love the house in Competa and felt very much at home. Sallie (Surrey) May 2018 Thanks for an excellent holiday. Over the years I have been on 30 plus Ramblers or HF walking holidays (three in the last year alone) and last week was the best and most enjoyable of them all. Ian (York) May 2018
Just wanted to thank you once again for a terrific holiday experience. You always put a hundred and ten percent into your holidays and it shows. Hope to see you all again soon. Chrissie (York) May 2018.
Many thanks for a wonderful holiday. Walking was amazing. Challenging but in a good way ?. Wild flowers and scents were beautiful. Emily (Edingburgh) May 2018
Thanks for a lovely week walking between the beautiful white villages. It was all very enjoyable, the accommodation – especially the Spanish Steps house – the meals, the company, and of course the walks. I had a really good time! Christine (Herts) May 2017
Just a word to say a big Thank You for organising a super week for us on the Silk Trail. Everything was just great – walks, food, and new companions, all topped up with lovely Spanish sunshine. 4 nights in Nerja was quite sufficient, Mike+Kenneith walked back over to Maro one day, not surprising really. We all explored the caves on the last morning, taking the little tourist train. Maureen (Surrey) May 2017
This just a quick note to say how much we both enjoyed our holiday with you and we really appreciated the fact that nothing was too much trouble for any of you. All the accommodation was very comfortable, especially the Competa house. The walking was hard but very enjoyable – its great to see parts of the country that very few people get to visit. We will certainly be coming back in the not too distant future. Mark & Ann (Oxford) October 2016
Many thanks for the holiday which was great and just what we needed. Although the theme was different, it was every bit as enjoyable as our Two Continents holiday last year, even the walk in the rain. Please pass on our thanks to Sue and Andy? You all put a huge amount into making the week a success, and you should not under- estimate how much it was appreciated. Elizabeth & John (Edinburgh) October 2016
Once again thanks for organising another fantastic holiday for us – loved every minute of it! Andrew & Ros (Solihull) Oct 2016
We would like to thank Spanish Steps for a wonderful holiday, your attention and pre-planning are to be admired and we all appreciated it. I have spread the word to all who ask me how we got on in Andulacia, so you may gain some extra new faces for your future holidays. I will continue to review the website to see if you are going to return to Morocco as we would like to be part of your party. Jo & Alex (Falkirk) Oct 2016
We had a fab experience of walking in the Silk Trail. Everything from our great guide Andy to the food, sunshine and glorious scenery. Each day had a new venture with fun. Jim certainly stole the show on the donkey!! The very deserved beer at the end of each walk makes me thirsty even back home in wet Ireland. We have such fond memories of Andalucia. Many thanks again, Dolores & Louise (Dublin) June 2016
Just a quick note to thank you and the Team Strange for a great week of Spanish sunshine, scoff, steep slopes and levity. If the others enjoyed it as much as me you have another A1 to chalk up on the success scale. Patrick (Midlothian) April 2016
A belated thanks for a wonderful holiday – again. I have run out of superlatives to describe how much we enjoy our holidays with Spanish Steps. I know the weather cheated us out of one of the walks but the others were as enjoyable as ever and it was good to revisit certain parts from previous holidays. Spanish Steps hospitality was up to its usual high standards and Andy is certainly keeping these going. Dorothy & Chris (Cumbria) April 2016
I would like to thank you for making my holiday so enjoyable. I haven’t stopped talking about it since getting back. I would certainly recommend the holiday to any one who wanted fresh air, good walks, excellent food and meeting like minded people Paul (West Midlands) April 2016
Thanks for the fantastic week. We enjoyed every minute and hopefully will return soon for another Spanish Steps adventure. Linda and Martin (Hants) May 2015
Just got home from our stay in Malaga and would like to say a big thank you to Spanish Steps for an enjoyable holiday.Peter and Andy looked after us very well, fitting the walking to our abilities. The food and the company was excellent. Thanks again. James and Marie (Newcastle). May 2015
Many thanks for what was our best ever walking holiday. The walks were amazing stops for refreshments really well chosen at end of walks, accommodation and meals top class especially at Antonios..Looking forward to another Spanish Steps walking holiday in the future. Pat and Patricia (Ireland) October 2014
We (the Bogtrotters) have all arrived home safely. Thank you so much for such a lovely time on The Silk Trail. Julian and I had a really super holiday and we would like to thank you. It was lovely for us that we did not have to think at all about the organising of the holiday. You were brilliant and had worked so hard to organise transport, food and of course those fabulous walks. It was great meeting other walkers as well, a lovely bunch. The Bogtrotters (Beds) October 2014
Just wanted to say thank you for another wonderful holiday. It was a fantastic week and the walks were truly spectacular. We had a great time and thought the group was brilliant. Have a good summer and hope to see you again next year. Linda & John, (Surrey) Spring 2012
Just a quick email to express our sincere thanks to you both for yet another fantastic Spanish Steps holiday. We very much enjoyed the company and camaraderie of the whole group, many of whom, like us, expressed a wish to return next year to repeat the Competa based village holiday which was our introduction to Spanish Steps. Of course, we selfishly hope that you do not decide to retire just yet and thus look forward to perhaps experiencing a trip to Fez, which you mentioned you were investigating. We appreciate all the hard work it no doubt takes to create such a marvellous experience for so many. Marie and Dave, (Kent) Spring 2012.
…. the walking was fantastic (as always), the scenery breathtaking and we were elevated to a new level of achievement. Ian & Pam, (Newcastle upon Tyne) Spring 2012.
You need to know that our time with you was very special and energizing. The hotels were great, the food was amazing, the hikes phenomenal, and the company of your family was the icing on the cake. An all around, great experience. Thank you over and over. Wilf (leader of a group of 21 from Canada) Autumn 2012.
Route of the Pueblos Blancos
I thought that I should write to thank youfor a super holiday. It is refreshing to deal with a company who are in tune with their clients but just as importantly the local people providing services to the group. It all came together extremely well. Martin (Edinburgh) Oct 2019
Thank you for another marvellous Spanish Steps holiday. We’re already looking forward to the Semana Santa week next year. Hugh & Ishbel (Ayrshire) Oct 2019
It was a wonderful holiday and exactly how we had remembered it would be from the first holiday we did with you in 2012. The walks were magnificent and just the right length (for me that is! ). It was so good to see you again after all of those years and to see that you are still striding with the best of them. Keep up the good work! With best wishes to Sue and Andy, and hoping to see you again in future” Nick & Margo (Halifax Nova Scotia) April 2019
I just want to thank you for the fabulous holiday Diana, Wendy, Alison and I had on the Route of the Pueblos Blancos. It was tremendous fun, the walks were stunning and Peter and Andy are the best guides anyone could want.. Just as you did 2 years ago, you made us feel like one big family and the companionship really added an extra dimension to the holiday. That was brought home to me when we met another walking group and saw some of them looking fed up and weary. You went out of your way to make sure we all had a great time.Hope to see you for another walk. Kathryn (Kent) April 2019
Thank you so much for a wonderful walking holiday. We really enjoyed it all – the company, the scenery, the food (and drink!), some amazing weather and your wonderful organisational skills and local knowledge. All the very best to you, Sue and Andy. Wendy and Alun (Tyne and Wear) April 2018
Just a very quick note to thank you both for another superb Spanish Steps holiday on the Pueblos Blancos. Amazing walks with stunning views, great accommodation and food quite superb. The beer and wine weren’t bad either. . Again, a genuine THANK YOU. Norman (Lancs) April 2018
We both found the week a wonderful experience and were thrilled by the walking, accomodation, food and company. Not least, Peter’s enthusiasm and knowledge made it an extra special holiday which only a small and dedicated company as yours can provide. Mike & Sue (Hampshire) September 2017
From my point of view, Pueblos Blancos 2017 was just as wonderful as Competa 2016. I enjoyed all the walks and I commend Spanish Steps on the easy, no-fuss arrangements, not to mention excellent restaurant choices, which mean I only have to turn up and enjoy it all. And with such a lovely group of people. How lucky is that! Stephen (Northern Ireland) September 2017
Thank you once again for another excellent holiday. All down to you being an excellent and knowledgeable host. We both enjoyed the walks, accommodation, lovely food and excellent company. The views around Grazalema were breath taking. Graham & Sue Cumbria September 2017 We thoroughly enjoyed the holiday. I thought your choice of accommodation was spot on – loved all the places we stayed in terms of location and facilities. The food was fantastic too – I’m surprised I didn’t put on weight. Its great to eat in a variety of places – especially when local people obviously use them too. The walks were perfect for us. As a first ‘go’ they were sufficiently stretching and every ache and blister was worth the views, the incredible birds and flowers, and a variety of terrains I really wasn’t expecting. And the remarkable views – fabulous. We appreciated your organisation, which left us with no decisions to make – a real treat! Everything was very smooth so thanks again for a great holiday. Barbara and Angela (South Yorkshire) April 2017
Thanks for a great time on the excellent and varied walks. The places we stayed in were great as usual and the group of folks was tremendous. Couldn’t have wished for more. Brian (Wolverhampron) April 2017
The holiday was fantastic and I would highly recommend it to family and friends. Your knowledge, enthusiasm and laid back attitude make for a very enjoyable time, so thank you! So until the next time, all the very best and keep up the great work. Jane, Jan, Sandra & Russell (Chesire ) Sept 2016
Yet again, we had a very good holiday with Spanish Steps. You laid on perfect weather, found us a good group and mix of people, as ever some great restaurants to eat (& drink), a lovely mix of accommodation and most importantly, some fantastic walking. We know you have been leading these walk for a while now but your enthusiasm for them has not diminished. Each day was a completely different type of walk offering some great views and varying degrees of difficulties but we both feel that Friday’s walk contouring the mountain and seeing the vultures was probably the highlight. Memories of sitting on the ridge having lunch and looking down on these amazing birds circling around will stay with us for a long time. Dorothy and Chris (Carlisle) Sept 2015.
The holiday was ‘epic’ as the younger generation say but appropriate. All our friends and family are envious of our holiday and also impressed that we all managed to do the walks. Peter, I can’t thank you enough. Evelyn and Helen and they are of the same opinion as us, this holiday will be a talking point for years to come. Doreen & Andy (Edinburgh) Sept 2015
Thank you so much for helping to make the week so special . The walks through the villages were fantastic… Great variety of accommodation – loved the house as much as the hotels … Ronda was a wonderful introduction to the Moorish influence … Grazelema was magic ! I could go on and on …It seemed longer than a week – we saw so much ! The last day – high among the raptors – was such a great way to end the week .! And finally – thanks a million for the photos – precious memories. Bernice (Ireland) May 2015
Carol and I are back in Oz after a gruelling 39 hour journey from Cordoba to Sydney. I will highly recommend your trips or at least the one we did. I loved everything about it. The accommodation, the food, the beer, the wine, the wonderful scenic walks, and the beautiful white villages. I thoroughly enjoyed the week. Thanks again. Linda and Carol (Sydney) May 2015
Many thanks for a great week’s walking last week. I enjoyed the experience immensely. Debbie (Australia) October 2014
We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday-there was a good variety of places to stay, lovely walks and of course the leadership was excellent! — It’s your local knowledge which makes Spanish Steps holidays so different to the other run of the mill group walking holidays-long may you continue. Jenny and Allan (Chesire) October 2014
Thanks for yet another great walking week. The walks were all really good and your choice of accommodation and restaurants were as usual excellent. The one thing you had really no control over, the make up of the group, was one of the best I have experienced on Spanish Steps. We all gelled well from day one. It was really nice of Sue to come and share our last night. She looks no different than she did twelve years ago. Jim & Joan (Washinton) June 2014 Back yesterday after a lovely holiday and many thanks for all your efforts to make the week go so well. We both look forward to walking with you again next year so will be in touch. Once again many thanks to you all. Linda and Tony (London) June 2014 We had a great time on Pueblos Blancos. Good weather, good walking and good company as always came together to make another memorable Spanish Steps adventure. Just like to say thanks for doing the homework on the bus to Seville. It was so easy and the bus station was only a few minutes walk from our apartment in Santa Cruz. We had a brilliant time and would recommend a couple of days in Seville to round off Pueblos Blancos to anyone. The train back to Malaga was direct and easy and cheap and the journey through the mountains was spectacular. Thanks once again. Margaret and David (Flintshire) June 2014
Journey through al Andalus
Thank-you for a most memorable and marvellous experience! I hope this was not my last trip with you so please keep my place warm for next time! Yvette (British Columbia) May 2023
We had a fantastic time, we packed so much into the holiday and a great group of people. I’m not sure how Andy managed to control us all, he must need a holiday now. Hope to get on another Spanish Steps holiday in the future. Jayne (Stockport) May 2023
We wanted to thank you both for a truly memorable tour of Andalucia. We thought the combination of walks, tours, hotels, restaurants was perfect – just what we needed. All with a delightful bunch of companions too! We are very keen on another trip with you guys for when we return to Europe next May – we will get in touch soon when we have an idea of dates and which tour. In the meantime thank you again for all your hard work in making our Spanish trip such a wonderful experience. Martin & Liz (Australia) Sept 2019
Just a quick not to say thank you so very much for a superb holiday through Andalucia, I loved the variety of the places we visited —El Torcal was right up my street, so peaceful and quiet, very interesting stone formations. Then the “piece de resistance”, the Caminito del Rey, was fab, loved it, although I was a little anxious about doing it not brilliant on heights, but I did and it was fascinating. Very interested in joining you for the trip to Marrakesh. Jane (Northants) Sept 2019
Just a quick note to say how much I enjoyed The Journey. All aspects of it were interesting, from the quirky hotels, varied local foods and lovely Spanish hospitality. The walks were all interesting, really enjoyed the train trip and the spectacular cultural aspects. Lots of hard work on your part organising all that, so many thanks to both of you for a great holiday, made more enjoyable by the other guests who were all fun. Diana (Leicestershire) Sept 2019
Just about to leave Malaga and would like to thank you and Andy again for the most fantastic trip. Great group lots of memories and photos to look back on. Hope it won’t be 9 years until our next trip with you. Nigel & Ros September 2019
Thank-you for opening our eyes to Andalucia. It truly is a unique, relaxed atmosphere and I fell in love with the area. Loved your relaxed manner in hosting us around – plenty of time to explore, always knew where to be and when but never felt rushed, plus be good food or a drink was never far away. Linda and Ian (Cambs) June 2018
Just a quick note to thank you and your team for making my recent holiday so enjoyable. It felt less like a group tour but more like an independent trip with new friends but with all the hassle of travel timings, hotel bookings and choice of restaurant done for me. I also appreciated your vast knowledge of the area. Linda (Hants) June 2018
Thank you so much for another wonderful holiday, it was just great. I really enjoyed all the towns we went to as well as the wonderful walks which will stay imprinted on my mind for a very long time.We were so lucky with the weather and my own collection of “magic moments” are all enhanced by the feeling of warmth and wellbeing – which I’m sure was nothing to do with the alcohol imbibed !!! As usual the food was amazing, the company fun and stimulating and the hotels were all interesting – slept better than I ever do at home. Sandra (Fife) June 2018)
We want to thank you once again for our wonderful holiday in Andalucia; excellent company, great food, wonderful walks and city explorations. What more could there be? Phil & Marilyn (Glos) Spring 2018
Just wanted to thank you for a truly memorable holiday which I am sure we will be talking about for many years to come! We had so much fun and loved all the different hotels, restaurants and beautiful walks that you arranged. Our dinner overlooking the bridge in Ronda was a highlight. Every day was different and we loved every minute, so a huge thank you for all your hard work in bringing it all together. Linda & John (Surrey) September 2017
Thank you once again for another very memorable holiday with Spanish Steps. Hugh and I thoroughly enjoyed the perfect mix of walking and city exploring. It has opened our eyes to the beauty of southern Spain and I’m sure we will return. Sue & Hugh (Hants) 2017
We have been on many family holidays to Spain but I think we always felt a little frustrated because we could see these stunning white towns up in the mountains – but never really got to see and experience them (just day visits) Now I think we feel we have had that experience (or at least a bit of it) – and we thoroughly enjoyed this and it leaves us wanting more…. thanks to Spanish Steps. Nial & Angela (Surrey) September 2017
We had a wonderful time and thank you so much for your hard work and all the time and effort you put in to making it such a memorable experience for us all. The hiking was nicely challenging and the food amazing. We enjoyed your company as well as the company of our fellow hikers. Hopefully we will be able return to stay with you in Competa in the future and bring some other Aussie hikers with us. Gayle & Paul Australia (Mount Albert) June 2017
We had a wonderful holiday and I thought you organised a great mix of sight seeing and hiking. We saw places and national parks which we’d never have known about and ate in Spanish restaurants ‘off the beaten track’. I have given your details to a few friends since we’ve returned as we loved the holiday so much. We certainly intend to go on one of your hiking holidays next year Griselda & Don (London) June 2017
I wanted to write and thank you once again for a most enjoyable walking adventure this year. As I have come to expect, everything was thoughtfully organized and executed with nary a hitch the entire 8 days. I thoroughly enjoyed being with such a charming and congenial group assembled this year. Are English people always this nice? I was going through my pictures today and found some I thought you might enjoy. I particularly like the ones of the Caminito. I have been to many of the national parks in the US and I thought the Guadalehorce park with Caminito was the equal of the most beautiful American parks. It is a truly spectacular place and I am fortunate to have been able to visit it. You will be hearing from me again in the not too distant future. Michael USA (New York) June 2017.
Now that we’re back home, we wanted to say how much we enjoyed our holiday with you in Spain. The tour certainly exceeded our expectations – we know why you have so many repeat customers! All the best in your future endeavours – perhaps our paths will cross again in the future. Stephen and Joan (Vancouver Canada) Sept 2015
We have arrived home safely with great memories of your trip. It certainly lived up to the descriptions given and we were delighted with the truly beautiful walks through interesting terrain with lovely vistas. Thank you for the help you gave us in planning our trip and your attention to detail. We enjoyed meeting and getting to know our group and found them very compatible and fun to be with. Bill has attached a couple of pictures which we hope will add to the great photos which you forwarded. Thanks again for a great trip. Shirley & Bill (Ontario Canada) Sept 2015
Thanks for an amazing holiday and for sharing with us your beautiful part of the world, we thoroughly enjoyed it and appreciated the places you took us to – wish we were still in Tarifa – after you left there was flamenco dancing outside the hotel which we watched from the balcony – thanks for laying that on ! Many thanks Suzanne & Ken (Herts) April 2015
The holiday has exceeded our expectations by a wide margin. Jackie knew pretty much what to expect as she had done the walks from Competa last year but I had little idea of what was in store apart from wondering if I was going to make the first walk advertised at 5-6 hours and 11 miles in length. In the event it was easier than I expected but more importantly, quite exhilarating. Must be something to do with the clear air and the bright sunlight which brings out all the colours and shapes of the countryside. Granada was wonderful and the lunch at the Kiki bar on the top of the hill overlooking the Alhambra quite memorable. El Torcal was quite unexpected; it wasn’t a long walk but scrambling over the boulders presented quite a challenge to some of us less agile ones. In the event I’m glad we didn’t do the downhill path as it would probably have spoiled us for the following day’s walk from Ronda. This was quite outstanding – through wonderful countryside covered in spring flowers and looking I am sure at its finest. The train trip down to Tarifa was quite a highlight. Tarifa was more interesting than we expected. The old town so conveniently located behind the hostal proved to be a source of excellent food with bars and restaurants to satisfy all tastes. The walk through the hills to the hermita was a delight and the return along the beach was a fitting climax to a wonderful week’s experience. I mustn’t forget to mention the delightful first night we spent in Competa at the Spanish Steps house and the unforgettable meal we had at Antonio’s in Canillas. You and Sue have been remarkable hosts and we cannot fail to be impressed not only by the energy which you devote to ensuring your guests have a good time but also that you really seem to enjoy it yourselves. Thank you so much to both of you for a memorable time, you have a wonderful thing going there. Hasta pronto! Hugh & Jackie (Surrey) May 2014)
We really enjoyed every minute of the holiday. With your extensive knowledge of the area we saw places that we would never have seen. Your selection of restaurants was also top class. We came away with enough memories to keep us laughing through the cold winter in Ireland. Hope to see you all again on another of your adventures. Many thanks Patrick and Patricia (Waterford, Ireland) September 2013
Brilliant week – thanks Peter for all your meticulous organisation yet again!! Great walking companions for the week – hope we can keep in touch. Jan & Gareth, (Cardiff) September 2013
Thank you to you, Andy and Sue for providing an incredible week for us, it definitely surpassed all my expectations. The scenery, food and people were fantastic. Every day brought something new and interesting. I really appreciate all the time and effort you put into making our holiday so memorable. I know with a group of 9 strong minded women that things are not always going to be plain sailing! However speaking to the ladies they all had a fantastic week …Jill (plus 7 friends from Elgin) June 2013
Huge thank you to Peter who helped us enjoy such fabulous walks. They truly were fantastic and we all thoroughly enjoyed The Journey with you. Also a special, thank you to Andy who looked after us on our El Torcal day. We had such a varied experience and got to see some wonderful places. I just wanted to say thanks to you Sue and Andy for making it a great holiday. We really enjoyed it and it gave us a great introduction to Andalucia. Kathy & Ian (Reading) April 2013.
Gail and I wish to thank you all for a wonderful holiday. We really appreciate the great amount of work that you must put into organising these holidays and the effort that you go to to ensure that people enjoy themselves. Peter and Andy are so kind and considerate and we were lucky to have the company of a very nice group of peopl We hope that we will be able to join you again for another adventure! Best wishes to you all and thanks again. Pam & Gail (Swansea) October 2012
Just a quick note to tell you that Chris, Kevin, Mal and I had a great time on our walk with you. Kevin absolutely loved Spain, and even thought Tangier was something he will never forget! Have a great Christmas, and I will keep recommending fresh walkers for you, many thanks, Louis (Australia) Journey through al-Andalus October 2012
Thank you for such a wonderful holiday in Andalucia. Despite the rather disappointing weather, what a lot of memories to treasure. Margo and I had a really good time and you really looked after us all so well. It was fun to be part of a group of like minded people and to glow with a sense of achievement after some of the more difficult walks. It has also given me an appreciation for the beauty, history and variety that is Spain, something that I had no idea about previously. Nick and Margo (Canada) April 2012
Greg and I would like to thank you for such a super holiday – we enjoyed it enormously. Shame about the weather but the walks and accommodation were great and the food superb. It was such a nice group. Back to work today – all a bit of jolt after a week of relaxation! Sara and Greg April 2012
Thank you so much for your kind support and consideration as well as the photos. I still review in mind every item filled with much fun, which we experienced all the way thru the Journey. Thank you again and take care. Shinji, (Japan) October 2012.
I thoroughly enjoyed myself on the Journey and would recommend it to everyone. The group was very international. I have since heard from Shinji in Japan, a lovely guy. I thought the whole group was marvelous and we gelled very well but the icing on the cake was you. You put a lot of us in the shade with your enthusiasm for life and good natured fun. Eddie (County Kerry) October 2012.
Two Continents – Tarifa to Fés
Thank you also for another great week, walking with Spanish Steps. We had a wonderful time; everyone in the group was so friendly and, even though we only met at the start of the holiday, it felt like walking with a group of friends, not strangers.
The walks were interesting, sometimes challenging, but always very pleasurable and rewarding, with wonderful scenery and great company. The meals were delicious, and we especially enjoyed eating at the little ‘off-the-beaten- track’ rustic houses in Morocco. We enjoyed staying in the traditional accommodation, with Casa Hasan in Chefchaouen being the favourite; such a wonderful place and lovely people making us really welcome. We also enjoyed meeting the guides in Morocco, who were very informative and friendly.
I hope the rest of your holidays go well this summer and that everyone enjoys them as much as we enjoyed the ‘Two Continents’. Alison (Northants) May 2023
What an amazing and timely adventure that was. Interesting and interested people that after a day or two, some spanish red wine and slowly peeling back the layers I found some wonderful connections, it has definitely help re ignite my wonder for the World and the people within it. My first trip overseas since covid and I think I needed it. Chefchaouen blew me away, Casa Hassan, the restaurant, the whole place really and Mohammed was probably the best walking guide I’ve ever had the fortune to follow and what a dude too. It goes to show the care and love you have put in over the years to build these connections, I just jumped on board for a weeks ride so thank you for having me and ma along. Mo (London) May 2023
An Ode to Spanish Styeps
The time has come it’s almost here, that final wine and one last beer.
We have done it before, we know how it ends. Another great holiday and many new friends.
Peter lugged his rocket fuel around, in heavy cases. The nightly gins ensuring that we all had happy faces
Were we brave or where they mad, the ten that did return. Did they come back just for the crack, will they never learn?
Carol, John and Darrel found, like all of us before, that Spanish Steps is an adventure and no ordinary tour.
‘Up’ means up, and ‘down’ means up … and so does ‘straight ahead’. But we always follow Peter, and are so easily led.
We followed marathon runners, on a tricky route downhill. And without Darrel and Kenny, Avril says she might be there still…
We followed to a swimming pool, for a cooling beer and swim. The fact there was no water did not stop Kenny jumping in.
Carol wanted ‘foreign’, and we got that all right. With beerless bars and windowless dars and prayer calls in the night.
The walk to Fes, over the hills saw our Irish lass turn white. Whilst our Denver honeymooner had to miss the last two nights
But we saw so many shades of blue, so many exotic sights. With Scenes that could be taken from ‘The Arabian Nights’
Turban lessons in the Kasbah, tanneries and fountains Marcus of Arabia striding Moroccan mountains.
So as we say an early goodbye, to get up before the sun. Lets raise a glass to everybody, and thanks for being such fun.
An ‘Ode’ from Ellie (London – Tarifa to Fés – Oct 2017
Many thanks for another wonderful and memorable holiday. Despite my somewhat dodgy constitution I had a fantastic time and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Marion (Dublin) Tarifa to Fes October 2017
We are safely home – the transfer to Fes airport went smoothly and the airport is very swanky and we were processed quickly – just so you know for future trips – in fact the flight landed at Stansted 20 mins early. Thanks for a great week and all the hard work you put into making it happen before and during our trip. Thanks again and best wishes for the future. Suzanne & Ken (Hertfordshire) Tarifa to Fes October 2017
I would like to thank you once more for a truly wonderful experience we had for the entire duration of our trip; how much hard work and personal involvement/exertion on your side it takes to make this kind of adventure work well for everyone I can completely appreciate. We loved our authentic and traditional accommodation, each with its own particular splendours; the sights; the friendliness and knowledge of our guides; food – and the company of like- minded people. As I mentioned to you during our trip I have been wanting to do this particular journey with Spanish Steps for some years, and I am pleased that it finally came to pass and that I have come across and chosen such a fine organisation. Sabine & Mervyn (Bangor NI) Granada to Fes June 2015
Can we thank you for a fantastic introduction to Andalusia, Moorish Spain and Morocco? Both of us had visited some of the sites before, but to do it as you had arranged was a very coherent, enjoyable and revealing experience. It was very well organised and was exactly what we were looking for although, of course, you had plenty of unexpected moments for us. Surprisingly the train journey from Fes, though long, actually aligned quite closely with Edith Wharton’s descriptions of her travels, although she went by car. Reading her book (In Morocco) while travelling only added to the experience and we would recommend it for anyone wanting to understand the whole of your ‘Two Continents’ trip. She even mentioned the Spanish-French border post that we passed on the way to FesWe both now have a much better understanding of that part of the world, its history and its peoples. Elizabeth & John (Edinburgh) Granada to Fes, June 2015
Many thanks for the wonderful holiday. I enjoyed every minute of every day, especially the company of yourself and the others. Granada and Fes were the highlights for me, but of course everything in between was awesome as well. Your itinerary is a fantastic insight into these beautiful countries and all the “locals” we met, especially Abdeslam, were so passionate and hospitable. Truly memorable.I have already recommended Spanish Steps to many and will continue to do so. Janelle (NSW Australia) Granada to Fes June 2014
I very much enjoyed the holiday, the walks, the food and the company too. What a lovely group of people! I really enjoyed the Moroccan food (and wine!) and intend to find some recipes to try out on my family. As you know I was concerned about the Fez addition, but it turned out to be very interesting as Fez was such a contrast to Chefchaouen & Tangier. I really do appreciate your efforts to make your holidays such a wonderful experience, enjoying comfortable accommodation and delicious food. I had a really great time and hope to be back to try another Spanish-Steps special in the future Frances (Southampton) Two Continents June 2014
I really enjoyed the holiday, everything was excellent from start to finish, as I knew it would be. Your organization and attention to detail is second to none. There were no lows, and I hardly dare list the highs in case I miss something, but here we go:- Tarifa:- • The walk on the second day – absolutely stunning • The Beach Bar – such a beautiful early evening location and fabulous gin and tonics – the addition of juniper berries – what a good idea! • Pacos – the food was delicious, a gem of a place which we would never have found on our own Chefchaouen:- • Casa Hassan – absolutely beautiful, so Moorish and certainly the prettiest and most unusual hotel bedroom I have ever stayed in! Peaceful, comfortable, clean and intriguing • The walk on my birthday and the fabulous lunch that day – the Berber girls, the kif fields, the beautiful scenery and the chicken tagine on the terrace overlooking the rose framed valley – what better birthday could I have asked for? (Of course, my special day continued long into the evening of the roasted goat…!!) • Spending time at the waterfall on our day off – I was absolutely fascinated by the women washing the carpets with a box of Tide… I have kept the list short, otherwise I will be describing the whole holiday to you as in fact the entire week was a high, which provided so many special memories. So thank you Peter and Andy for your company and your care, thank you to Sue also as I am sure she is involved with all the admin and organisation; Hope to be able to join you on another adventure soon!! Gillian (North Yorkshire) Two Continents June 2013
Just a small note to thank you for organising a wonderful walking holiday, I know that a lot of hard work went into making sure it was a wonderful experience, which I guarantee it was. Once again thank you all. Liz and Kirsty (Newcastle) Two Continents June 2013. We would both recommend the Two Continents trip to experience a totally different culture than we’re used to in Europe. The Moroccan food was excellent throughout which we admit was a real surprise to us, really tasty and filling. The accommodation in Chefchaouen, Fes and Marrakech were excellent, way beyond what we expected. Again another excellent trip organised by Spanish Steps. I am sure it won’t be our last. Ian and Deb (Eccles) Sept 2012.
Andrea and I enjoyed your tour program very much. I must do justice to the experience and put in writing as much as I can. The lodging was very special, the sights were amazing and the people were warm and delightful. I feel very privileged to have spent time with you. You put together an experience for us that will shape our thinking for years to come. Andrea and Wayne (USA) June 2012
